U of A Rant #2
Okay. I have to voice this. Even of you’re taking a class that is required of you to obtain your degree, you should clearly THINK about the stupidity that flies out of your mouth during said class. Honestly. Jordan and I are in this terrible C Lit class together that is filled with science students, who are renowned for their incredible ability to entirely miss the point of all literature we’ve covered thus far. This evening we were discussing the feminine characteristics of a particular woman in the text, and this little slice of brilliance popped out of a girl’s mouth:
“Well, really, the only thing that makes Molly female is her sexuality.”
Thanks for that astute observation, eagle-eye. That’s equivalent to saying that the only thing that really makes up a book is pages and words. How the hell have you progressed this far in your academic career?
Honestly!

lol I am in a 400-level English class and a brilliant piece was donated. This fabulous geni-ass said, "Well... I think we can assume that this was all written by human beings."
..... Ummm ... DUH! So you are not alone.

Oh Keltie hunny, I'm going to have to disagree with you. Being sociology student who is specializing in human sexuality, I would have to agree with the statement that the only thing that technically qualifies males vs. females is her sexuality- or rather her sexual organs- the biological side of sexuality. Many today believe that gender is, in itself, a social construct and a figment of a past society's imagination. Today the lines seperating each 'gender' are blurry. In fact, with modern medicine, the lines are also getting blurry with biology.
Many scholars believe that we are entering an era of androgyny in which a concerted effort will be made to erase the notion of gender all together. I don't know if I agree with this, but i don't think that comment was as stupid as it sounded.
Cheers!

Zita,
While I’m sure you’re correct, and I agree that you raise a valid point, you must remember the element of context. Pulled out of context, there is a chance that some intelligence can be read into this statement; however, the individual in question was absolutely not referring to the blurring of any sociological and/or biological lines; she’s simply the class knowitall who is seriously enamored with the sound of her own voice.
To her credit, she did raise some valid arguments throughout the semester. However this was, by a wide margin, not one of them.
Your opinion is valued, and I appreciate you taking the time to share it.
Ahhh yes...the science student in the Arts class. Let's face it, we'd sound dumb as shit in a science class...but what self-respecting Lit student would find the need to pad out their semester with a senior level science class? It's why I have a love hate relationship with my Science Fiction class. Mostly hate.
